Frequently Asked Questions About NDIS Respite
What is NDIS respite?
NDIS respite is commonly used to describe a short stay away from home where an NDIS participant receives the support they need while their usual family members or informal carers have a break. Within the NDIS, these stays may be referred to as Short-Term Accommodation (STA), depending on the participant’s plan and circumstances.
Who can access NDIS respite?
Respite may be suitable for NDIS participants who rely on family members or other informal supports in their everyday lives. Whether it can be funded through an NDIS plan depends on the participant’s individual circumstances, support needs, goals and available funding.
Where is Stable & Nook?
Stable & Nook is located in South Gippsland, Victoria, between Fish Creek and Foster. Our 12-acre property offers a peaceful rural setting surrounded by rolling hills, nature and horses, with easy access to Wilsons Promontory, the Great Southern Rail Trail and the towns and attractions of South Gippsland.
What accommodation is available?
Participants can stay in one of our private accommodation options, allowing them to have their own comfortable space while still having access to agreed supports.
Rather than operating as a large group respite facility, our stays are intentionally small and personalised.
What can I do during a respite stay?
That depends on you.
A stay might include time with our horses, cooking, exploring the local area, visiting cafés, walking sections of the Great Southern Rail Trail, sightseeing, visiting Wilsons Promontory or simply enjoying some quiet time on the property.
We can work with participants and their support networks to create a stay around individual interests, abilities, goals and support needs.
Do I need to know how to ride a horse?
Absolutely not.
Our horse experiences aren’t about learning to ride. Participants may spend time observing the herd, grooming, walking alongside a horse or simply sharing quiet space with them.
Horses can provide wonderful opportunities for connection, present-moment awareness and co-regulation without needing words or riding skills.
Can horse experiences be part of my stay?
Yes. Stable & Nook specialises in equine-assisted experiences and therapeutic work, so interaction with horses can be incorporated where appropriate.
We will discuss the type of horse interaction and any associated costs with you before your stay, particularly where NDIS funding is being used.
Can I bring my own support worker?
Depending on the type of stay and your individual support requirements, we can discuss using your existing support worker or arranging supports as part of your stay.
The important thing is that we understand your needs before you arrive so that appropriate supports can be planned.
Are meals and activities included?
Your stay can be tailored according to your preferences. Options can include self-catering or assistance with meal preparation, and we can help plan local activities and experiences.
We provide a clear breakdown of accommodation, supports and optional costs before confirming your stay so you know exactly what is included.
How do I organise an NDIS respite stay at Stable & Nook?
Start with a conversation.
Tell us a little about yourself, what you’re hoping to get from your stay, your support needs and the things you enjoy.
We can then talk with you, your family, Support Coordinator or Plan Manager about creating a stay that feels right for you.
Sometimes a change of scenery is about much more than having a break.
It can be a chance to experience independence, discover new things, connect with nature and find a little more space to simply be.
Stay. Rest. Reconnect.
