Equine Assisted Therapy is a form of counselling that incorporates horses into the therapeutic process. Sessions may include activities such as observing, grooming, leading or interacting with horses while being guided by a qualified practitioner.
At Stable & Nook, we use the Equine Psychotherapy Institute (EPI) model, which combines evidence-based counselling approaches with experiential learning alongside horses. No horse experience is required.
Horses are highly sensitive animals that naturally respond to human emotions, body language and behaviour. Their immediate, non-judgemental feedback can help clients develop greater self-awareness, emotional regulation, confidence and communication skills.
Sessions are tailored to your individual goals and may include horse interactions followed by guided reflection and discussion.
Equine Assisted Therapy may support people experiencing:
- Grief and loss
- Trauma
- Anxiety and stress
- Depression
- Low self-esteem
- Emotional regulation difficulties
- Relationship challenges
- Life transitions
- Personal growth and self-discovery
Research into Equine Assisted Therapy continues to grow, with studies suggesting benefits for emotional wellbeing, self-awareness, confidence and social connection.
While more high-quality research is still needed, many clients report significant improvements in their mental health, relationships and overall wellbeing.

Many people arrive feeling nervous around horses. You will never be asked to do anything that feels unsafe, and we work at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
In fact, exploring fear and building confidence can often become a valuable part of the therapeutic process.

Please wear:
- Closed-toe shoes (boots or sturdy runners)
- Comfortable clothing suitable for the weather
- A hat and sunscreen in warmer months
- A warm jacket during cooler weather
Horses have shared a relationship with humans for thousands of years. As herd animals, they are naturally aware of their environment and the emotional state of those around them.
Their ability to provide immediate, honest and non-verbal feedback makes them powerful partners in personal growth, healing and self-discovery.
