Equine Assisted Therapy

Discover healing, growth and connection through the wisdom of horses.

Life can sometimes leave us feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, stuck or uncertain about how to move forward. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, stress, trauma, grief, relationship challenges or simply seeking greater self-awareness, Equine Assisted Therapy offers a unique and powerful pathway to healing.

At Stable & Nook, we combine professional counselling with meaningful interactions alongside horses in a safe, supportive and natural environment. Rather than sitting in an office talking about your challenges, you’ll have the opportunity to experience them in real time through activities with horses, creating insights and opportunities for growth that often go beyond words.

No horse experience is necessary.

What is Equine Assisted Therapy?

Equine Assisted Therapy is an experiential approach to counselling and personal development that incorporates horses into the therapeutic process.

Sessions may involve observing, grooming, leading or interacting with horses from the ground while working alongside a qualified practitioner. The focus is not on riding, but rather on what the horses can teach us about ourselves, our emotions, our relationships and our patterns of behaviour.

As highly sensitive herd animals, horses respond honestly to what is happening around them. They offer immediate, non-judgemental feedback that can help us develop greater awareness, confidence, emotional regulation and connection.

Why Horses?

Horses have shared a relationship with humans for thousands of years. As prey animals, they are naturally attuned to their environment and the emotional states of those around them.

Unlike people, horses don’t respond to what we say. They respond to what we communicate through our body language, energy, emotions and actions.

This unique ability allows them to become powerful partners in the therapeutic process by helping us:

  • Increase self-awareness
  • Build confidence and self-esteem
  • Improve communication skills
  • Develop healthy boundaries
  • Strengthen emotional regulation
  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Improve relationships
  • Build trust and connection
  • Develop mindfulness and presence

Many clients describe the experience as both grounding and transformative.

How Does It Work?

Every session is tailored to your individual needs and goals.

You may be invited to participate in activities such as:

  • Meeting and observing the horses
  • Grooming and caring for a horse
  • Leading or walking alongside a horse
  • Mindfulness and grounding exercises
  • Problem-solving activities
  • Exploring boundaries and communication
  • Reflective discussion and counselling

Following the activity, we explore what occurred during the interaction and how it may relate to your life, relationships, challenges or goals.

The horses often provide valuable insights that help clients see situations from a new perspective and discover practical strategies for moving forward.

This approach draws on:

  • Gestalt Therapy
  • Mindfulness-Based Practice
  • Somatic Awareness
  • Trauma-Informed Care
  • Relational Therapy
  • Experiential Learning

The horses are not viewed as tools but as valued partners in the process, offering opportunities for reflection, awareness and growth.

Sessions are always adapted to your goals, comfort level and individual circumstances.

What Happens During a Session?

Every person and every horse is different, so no two sessions are exactly the same.

Some sessions may feel calm and reflective, while others may reveal new challenges, insights or opportunities for growth. There is no right or wrong way to participate.

You are never expected to do anything that feels unsafe or beyond your comfort level. Together, we create a pace that feels supportive and appropriate for your individual needs.
